Why I Love Generational Sessions
I’m often asked what is my favorite thing to photograph and every time I answer, I am immediately taken back to my childhood. Growing up we always took pictures with my cousin and grandparents. It was back when Olan Mills was still around and I remember it would just be so much fun-i’d get to dress the same as my sister-which I loved and she hated and we’d literally spend the day together as a family playing dress up, as a child what’s better than that?
These photographs are more than just a picture-they are truly legacy pieces that leave such a lasting memory.
What is a generational shoot?
Generational photography sessions are sessions involving multiple family generations-usually grandma and grandpa, mom and dad, siblings, and cousins. It’s a whole family affair. Many families choose to do generational shoots yearly, as milestones, during holidays, such as Mother’s Day or Thanksgiving. The images captured are such a great variety-grandma, mom, and daughter-grandparents and kids, all the cousins…the list goes on and on.
Emotional Impact
Generational photography sessions have such a strong emotional impact. Growing up with all of grandparents and being able to capture an image with my grandparents, tias and tios, mom and dad, cousins and siblings just brings me so much joy to see displayed on a wall. Seeing it brings back the reminder of the day and the unity of my family. Generational photo sessions allow families to capture special bonds between family members and the sessions bring laughter, tears and connection between everyone-it’s truly something special to experience.
Lasting Legacy
As cliche as it sounds, photographs are really a frozen moment in time. In our fast paced society, finding the time to coordinate between everyone’s schedule is the hardest part. We rarely think to gather everyone for a photograph together-until sometimes it’s too late. A generational photography session leaves a lasting legacy to be cherished for YEARS to come. Think of how much these photographs will mean in the next 10 years, 20 years, 50 years? And while I know we live in a digital society, printed and framed is my best recommendation for a generational portrait so we can feel that connection to our family every time we pass by and see the photograph.
My Favorite Part
My favorite part of generational sessions are seeing the loving interactions between family members. It brings such joy to see a true bond between cousins and the loving look from grandparents standing proud near their grand babies…big and small. I love hearing the family stories and learning more about the ins and out of their families, and after the session, I feel like I’m apart of the family. I love delivering the images to clients and seeing their reactions to the images we capture.
Generational photo sessions are some of the most meaningful moments I get to capture. There’s something truly special about photographing the roots, branches, and blooming flowers of a family tree—all in one frame. These portraits become more than just pictures—they turn into heirlooms that will be looked at, talked about, and cherished for decades to come.
